Meet Janie Johnson, a Texas cowgirl raised on ranching and rodeo — who now enjoys life as a barrel racer and western sports reporter.
Growing up on ranch in Canyon, Texas, as the daughter of a saddle bronc rider and a cutting horse competitor, Janie is a cowgirl through and through.
Following in her parents’ footsteps, Janie competed in multiple rodeo events as a child and continued to rodeo while earning her degree at the University of Texas with high honors in Radio/TV/Film.
Nowadays, while she continues to run barrels, Janie has made her career in TV.
From Ranching and Riding to On-Air Reporting
Starting out, Janie worked as an associate producer for the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo, covered National Junior High and High School Rodeo Association events, and reported for the WNFR Pre-show. From there, her career took flight. She’s served as a sideline reporter for the X-treme Broncs Finale on CBS Sports, the WCRA Semi-Finals, the Cinch Timed Event Championship, the National Barrel Horse World Championships.
Recently joining the team at The Cowboy Channel in Fort Worth, Janie hosts the network’s daily Western Sports Round-Up series and travels — in her CITY boots — as a field reporter to conduct sideline interviews at rodeos across the country.
All Seasons, Occasions, and Settings
“They are my go-to footwear simply because they are so comfortable and fit into my lifestyle all year round,” Janie says. “I have worn my CITY boots all across the country and beyond. I took them with me to Canada and wore them at the Calgary Stampede and all over rodeos up north. I wear them in Texas at the Coors Ranch Rodeo Finals and while working as a sideline reporter at RFDTV’s The American at Cowboy’s Stadium, and I wear them all ten nights in Las Vegas at the NFR — talk about a ton of walking. Most importantly, I wear my CITY boots to all the little things, from dinner dates, to work at The Cowboy Channel studios, or just because they look great for a casual Sunday brunch.”
Most Memorable Moment
“I wore CITY boots to my dad’s bronze unveiling in Fort Pierre, South Dakota. It was a very special outdoor banquet event where my dad was getting presented with a life-size bronze of himself in front of the cowboy museum. It was a huge honor and I wanted to look just right. I had just received my hot pink heart CITY Boots in the mail a few days before and it was the most perfect event for them. My mom also wore her navy CITY boots and we got so many timeless family pictures that I will cherish forever. We both got so many compliments on our boots and I have to say, we did look pretty sharp!”
Most Memorable Outfit
“My favorite ensemble is always from NFR in Las Vegas. My go-to pair of CITY Boots out there is my Sunset chocolate brown ones. On round 10 of the rodeo, I wore a brown suede fringe skirt and a gold sequined jacket with a brown fashion hat. I tied it all together with my beautiful chocolate City Boots. I felt like a million bucks in that outfit. The look was extra fun for me because it my version of a full Vegas cowgirl outfit. I was out in Vegas working on my feet all day for two weeks so by round 10 I was especially grateful for my extra comfortable boots to let me finish of the Vegas trip with a bang!”
